Atalanta needed an 82nd-minute goal from substitute Nikola Krstovic to draw 1-1 with Kairat Almaty in Bergamo on Thursday night, after Marc Gual had put the Kazakh side ahead on the counter-attack in the 53rd minute of this UEFA Conference League league phase match.
The goals and the late rescue
Atalanta had the better chances in a goalless first half without taking one. Jonathan Rowe’s strike from outside the box was palmed out from under the bar, and Marco Carnesecchi needed a double save, first from Alexandr Mrynskiy and then from Gustavo Mendonca’s follow-up, to keep Kairat out at the other end.
Kairat scored eight minutes after the restart. Edmilson sent Gual away on a quick counter-attack and the striker beat Carnesecchi to make it 1-0. Atalanta’s response came from the bench. Ederson, on at half-time, had a half-volley from close range saved, and from the resulting corner Relja Obric knocked the ball back for Krstovic, on for Gianluca Scamacca in the 67th minute, to finish from close range in the 82nd minute.
It was a similar story elsewhere in Italy on Thursday, where AC Milan lost 2-0 at home to Ferencvaros, and the point in Bergamo at least kept Atalanta ahead of the kind of result that Napoli’s injury-hit week has put into focus for Serie A clubs in Europe.

Kamaldeen Sulemana: 5. Booked in the 27th minute and replaced by Ederson at half-time.
Lazar Samardzic: 5. Little room against Kairat’s back five and taken off in the 58th minute for Charles De Ketelaere.
Jonathan Rowe: 7. Atalanta’s most dangerous starter. Four shots, two on target, including the fierce strike palmed out from under the bar.
Gianluca Scamacca: 4. One shot on target, two offsides and a booking before Krstovic replaced him in the 67th minute. The goal his replacement scored underlined the problem.

What it means
The draw takes Atalanta to four points from three league phase matches, in a week when Juventus carried a thin squad through their own European trip. Maurizio Sarri’s side are now seven matches without a win in all competitions, and Krstovic’s goal was the difference between a difficult point and a home defeat by the Kazakh champions.
